Philosophy

Yoga can help you develop a balanced body, good breathing and bring feelings of inner peace. By quietening the fluctuations of the mind, it can also help you connect with your true nature.

At The Yoga Garden, our philosophical approach is based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These teachings emphasise the uniqueness of each individual. This is reflected in Yoga Sutra 3:6: Tasya Bhumisu Viniyogah: '... gradual progress towards a personal goal, based on our existing abilities (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual)... '.

In Sanskrit, the word viniyoga describes a proper application in any specific situation. In the yoga context, 'Viniyoga of Yoga' means that to obtain the best results for a specific individual, an appropriate application of yoga is necessary. What is right for one person may not be of benefit for another.

Yoga was traditionally taught on a 'one-on-one' basis and a personal practice is the best way to achieve your individual goals. In our group classes, we offer a range of tools and modifications to optimise the benefits of the practice for each person. We also guide you to be aware of how you feel before, during and after the practice. This awareness is very important and can be achieved by practising with your own personal intention (goal), a relaxed attention (focus) and no tension (including agitation of the mind or body).

Another important concept is that each individual consists of five different layers (body, breath/vitality, mind, intellect/personality and emotions) and these layers are interconnected. For example, while a physical practice will obviously have direct effects on our body, it will also have significant effects on other layers of ourselves. In our approach, all movements are taught in connection with the breath. In this way, our practices integrate body, breath and mind.

At the Yoga Garden, we provide you with a peaceful and nurturing environment in order to help you achieve optimum well-being. Every teacher has been trained in the tradition of Sri T Krishnamacharya. We look forward to sharing these teachings with you, and guide you in your journey and growth through yoga.
